Starting with the conquests of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC, the Greek culture spread as far east as modern-day Afghanistan, and Egypt was ruled for three centuries by the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, which was founded by one of Alexander's generals. In Ancient Greece's apogee, the dominant cities of Greece were Athens and Sparta, which often were at war against each other. Through colonization and conquest, Greek language and culture came to stretch far beyond the territory of modern Greece, with especially strong footprints in Sicily and across Asia Minor (today, the Asian part of Turkey). Greece later entered a golden age for philosophy, drama, and science. During this period, the Greeks defended themselves against the mighty Persian Empire in a series of wars which became legendary in Western culture. The period of the 5th and 4th centuries are today known as Classical Greece. Among them are the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic poems describing the Trojan War, supposedly fought in the 12th century BC, and part of the Greek foundation myth. The first written records from the Greek city-states, poleis, date to the 9th century BC. However, there are no surviving historical records from these societies. Since the 27th century BC, the Minoan culture had flourished on Crete, until displaced by the Mycenaeans around the 16th century BC. ![]() Great article, very useful for clients or beginners in the industry (and even for non-native speakers in the agencies, who meet the terms for the first time). Have you heard some confusing logo terminology? Are you unsure about which type of logo you need? Leave a comment and we’ll help bring some clarity. Will you be printing your logo on bumper stickers? Creating billboards? Starting a viral marketing campaign? Do you need to communicate more with external customers or internal employees and volunteers? You may need a collection of wordmark, brandmark, lettermark, and various lockups to meet your needs. The trick is to find the best combination of visual appeal and clear communication while meeting the restrictions of any specific application.ĭeciding on a logo format is all about the application. Lockups can also be made from a main logo and a department name or a logo and slogan.īusinesses often use a lockup, sometimes called a combination logo, as their primary identifying mark. This is the exact arrangement of the individual pieces to create a new whole. While a wordmarks, brandmarks, and lettermarks can operate separately, they can also appear “locked together” as a lockup. ![]() Most people don’t know HBO stands for “Home Box Office,” so it would be silly for the movie channel to use that full name in its primary logo. By using a lettermark logo, the 24-hour breakfast chain found a place in our hearts and bellies as IHOP. International House of Pancakes is quite a mouthful when you’re discussing where to grab stuffed French toast at 2 a.m. Universities are referred to by their initials more often than their full names, so these institutions also need a recognizable lettermark.Ī lettermark can be useful if you have a long name or are more commonly known as an acronym. Think of the Yankees and the classic NY on their hats. Sports teams often use lettermarks as part of their greater branding systems. It’s the design of a brand’s initials only. Many companies use a brandmark as one part of a greater logo family.Ī lettermark is like a logo’s monogram. Brandmarks are also useful for internal communications or when you want to be subtler with your branding. Sometimes space just isn’t available for your full wordmark. That oh-so-sleek nibbled fruit tells you all you need to know.īrandmarks, also called iconic logos or logomarks, are useful for small business, too. You don’t need to read a company name of the back of your Mac to know it’s an Apple product. The world’s most recognizable companies use brandmarks because they’re so well-known that a symbol is sufficient. ![]() But using a wordmark as your primary logo can be difficult if you have a particularly long or difficult to pronounce business name.Ī brandmark is a symbol that represents a brand without the accompanying name. This can be especially important for small businesses and nonprofit organizations that haven’t yet built a large following. The benefit of a wordmark is that it features the full name of your company or organization so it cultivates clear brand recognition. Wordmarks can also be called logotypes, emphasis on type. The whole design is wrapped up in the typography, the nuanced handling of the letters only without additional symbols or graphics. It includes the exact typeface, color, letter spacing, and arrangement of a word. Use this quick guide to master logo terminology and learn about the most common logo forms.Ī wordmark is the custom design of a brand name. ![]() Logos come in all shapes, sizes, and formats. ![]() ![]() ![]() Video records enable an examination of visually and acoustically described behavior that provide insight on the importance of contextual cues for how dolphin signal-receivers respond to signalers. ![]() Inter-observer reliability is also possible from videotaped records, thus providing a set of observations able to withstand the rigors of statistical machinations. Video recordings are especially useful for documentation, and subsequent analysis, of subtle within-group signaling of dolphins underwater, where they spend over 85% of their time. More importantly, comparisons of specific behaviors between individuals and groups of dolphins are facilitated. These data can be analyzed for evidence of acoustic, visual, and tactile signal exchange and behavioral coordination within varying social contexts. Observations of dolphin behavior are enhanced through the use of video recordings valuable information is preserved and the dynamics of inter-animal relations, associations, behavior, and sociality can be examined. Location of the vocalizing dolphin is based upon associating visual distribution of animals with directions to sound sources as determined by aural psycho-acoustics.ĭudzinski and Gregg both used an ECD – echolocation click detector – that was added to the original design in a small second housing containing a digital audio (or recently an M-Audio) recorder together with a pre-processor circuit that allowed detection of the highly directional part of a dolphin’s echolocation ‘clicks’ and makes these audible and recordable.ĭudzinski affectionately calls the MVA her “array”–since it contains at least two hydrophones. Hydrophone spacing on the housing is scaled to the human inter-aural distance based upon the speed of sound in water (4.5 times faster than in air). Manually operated under water, the system consists of two omni-directional hydrophones cabled through a custom underwater housing into a stereo video camera. The mobile video/acoustic system (MVA) was developed to permit real-time synchronous recording of the sounds and behaviors of individual, free-swimming dolphins. Underwater observations of dolphins that are greater than 180 s become true encounters by definition > Short Encounter – Any underwater observations of dolphins between 30 s & 180 s. ![]() Spatially, each individual in a single subgroup is within at least five dolphin-body widths of its nearest conspecific. > Subgroup – Dolphins observed in apparent association, moving in the same general direction, although not all individuals necessarily heading in the same direction, and engaged in the same activity. At Mikura, the long axis placed parallel to the coastline. > Group – The “total available dolphins” observed within an imaginary ellipse, with a 200 m long axis & 100 m short axis for dimensions. A mobile video/acoustic system (MVA) is used to record dolphin behavior and sound. Simultaneous video and stereo audio recording of identified dolphins and real-time, all-occurrence documentation of specific behaviors and group activity provide a data record. The use of a video game controller to pilot the 23,000-pound Titan vessel on its dives 13,000 feet below sea level sparked mockery online, with some claiming the sub was destined to fail.Focal animal and focal group follows provide the framework for data collection focusing on dolphin signal exchange and contact behavior. The crew in the sub receives text message instructions from the surface ship and then uses the controller to steer the sub. Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, the company behind the Titan's deep-sea tours, told CBS News in November that the vessel was operated with a modified Logitech gamepad controller. The support ship transports the vessel to and from the location where the dive is taking place. The submersible, called the Titan, is unlike a submarine in that it does not have enough power to leave and return to port on its own without the help of a mothership. ![]() The tourist submersible that went missing while carrying five people to view the Titanic shipwreck on Sunday is piloted with a video-game controller, prompting some criticism, but even the US Navy has utilized controllers in the past. If you are gardening on a slope, you should have your rows run perpendicular to the slope, no matter what. Should the garden rows go East to West, or North to South? Less food for your plant, means less size and vegetable yield. Less sunlight will mean less photosynthesis, and less food for your plant. If this is not possible for some reason, then place taller plants straight west of shorter plants. ![]() This is very important, as short pepper plants behind tall tomato plants will not receive much sunlight. When planning your garden and planning rows, you need to keep shorter vegetables to the South of taller vegetables. Why you should keep shorter plants on the South side of taller plants Plus, it will help prevent you from buying or growing too many plants. But, when I follow these steps I ensure that I won’t over-plant or overcrowd my garden. I often find that I have to go through several iterations for my garden. That’s it! You’ve now got a plan for your garden this year. Also, note the height in feet or cm in the circle. Draw a circle with the same diameter (distance across) as the spacing. ![]() We have a quick reference guide for typical height and spacing of vegetable plants.ĥ – Start drawing in the vegetables, represented as circles on your garden. Also, note their typical heights and spacing. This allows you to freely walk and move throughout your garden without damaging plants.Ĥ – List out the vegetables you would like to grow, and the quantities. In general you should have at least 18″-24″ (45-60 cm) between rows in your vegetable garden. This will serve as dividers between your garden rows. This step helps you visualize and think about if there will be any shading issues.ģ – Sketch walkways, or path ways. Any tree or building should be sketched in a rough manner. But, do this for what is practical and logical for your garden.Ģ – Next, sketch a compass to note the directions North, South, East, and West. Draw this to scale, so, if you have a full grid on your paper, it is easy to have each ‘square’ represent 1 foot (30 cm). Sketch the entire perimeter, noting a gate if there is one. Nowadays, the word brassy is misused way too much, and a lot of people don’t even know what it means. Hair may be viewed as “warm,” but that does not mean it is brassy. Think of warm tones as having a little more of a natural tone to them. Ashy tones can appear to have a silver or grey undertone. You run the risk of drying out your hair and robbing it of its new color if you wash it too quickly.Īll orange/yellow tones in the hair are neutralized by ash tones because they are blue/violet based. After that, it will give your hair some time to absorb those oils, aiding in hair conditioning. Additionally, it will allow your hair time to replenish the natural oils that were rinsed out during the treatment. This gives the hair cuticle time to close, possibly extending the life of the color. BUT! The more time you give up, the better. We advise waiting AT LEAST 48 hours before washing the hair after the initial color procedure. The hair is “swept” with the lightener or color, giving it a dimensional appearance. It imitates highlights during balayage services to produce a more subdued appearance. The French word for “sweeping” is “balayage,” which in this context would be a better way to describe the method. I believe that the best way to define an ombre is as a hue that transitions from any dark to light gradient, or vice versa. We advise keeping a close check on it the entire time and not leaving it in for longer than 45 minutes. ![]() If you leave it on for longer than 30 minutes, the color can turn out overly light or dark.Īdditionally, if you leave it on for too long, your hair may absorb too much color and turn green. What occurs if the toner is left on too long? ![]() Because damp hair is more porous, the toner can be distributed and used more effectively. If you apply toner to somewhat damp hair as opposed to soaking wet or entirely dry hair, you will get greater results. Generally recognised as having one of the best responses to COVID-19 all around the world, case numbers are now soaring to record numbers and we are approaching nearly 6 weeks in a hard lockdown. Morrison has said all Australians over 16 will be offered a vaccine by the end of the year, with prospects for achieving that boosted on Monday when the country’s pharmaceutical regulator gave provisional approval for the Moderna shot.Australia is going through one of its toughest periods throughout the entire COVID-19 pandemic. “I know they’re sick of it, I know they’re angry and I know they want it to stop and for life to get back to where they knew it,” Morrison told reporters in Canberra.Īustralia has reported a total of about 36,630 cases and 940 deaths, according to the Health Ministry. Sydney’s lockdown is set to end on August 28 but the state government has indicated that restrictions will remain through September. State capital Melbourne’s lockdown is currently scheduled to end on Thursday, and state Premier Daniel Andrews said the restrictions in areas outside the city would be eased on Monday.
